Ethiopia Solar Development and Infrastructure Improvement

The Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has decided as a nation to make a rapid foray into solar energy.  In the past, they were still learning the technical side of solar development.  The government feels much more comfortable today now that they better understand how projects are funded and implemented. The GoE's goal is increasing installed solar power capacity, electrification of rural areas, attracting investments and partnerships, increasing policy and regulatory support, and sustainable development.

Ethiopia is a net exporter of Power and Energy.  They are awash in hydro power, having developed multiple hydropower projects over last 15+ years.  However, economic growth is outstripping the availability of new hydropower units and fossil energy is not a viable option for climate change issues.  Also, Ethiopia plans to continue exporting electricity to neighboring countries through the existing transmission network.

The Recursive Energy team has been on the ground in Ethiopia for over five years working with Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) on various initiatives, including solar development and an AI pilot program to inspect their transmission system to anticipate maintenance and reliability issues. Recursive Energy’s long-term commitment to Ethiopia has resulted in authorization by EEP to build one or more large solar arrays.  Recursive's pipeline includes a total of 1.4 GW of solar projects in Ethiopia over the coming years.
